Educational and Professional Experience

My undergraduate degree in psychology (1972) is from the State University of New York at Binghamton where my professors were mostly interested in animal learning and motivation. I am grateful to them for the empirical lens to which I look at the world, even though my own interests have become much more applied. My master’s (1974) and doctoral degrees (1977) are from the University of Toronto. My internships were at Thistletown, a children's mental health centre, and the Oakville Reception and Assessment Centre, an interdisciplinary assessment facility for juvenile delinquents. I also completed briefer training experiences in schools, a psychiatric hospital, and a counselling clinic whose clients were mostly student nurses. I became a registered psychologist in Ontario in 1978 and hold the Certificate of Professional Qualification (CPQ) from the Association of State and Provincial Psychology Boards.

I worked as a supervising school psychologist from 1977 to 1981, when I joined the faculty of the School of Psychology of the University of Ottawa. While on leave from the University of Ottawa, I taught at the University of Toronto, the University of Oxford and the University of Florence. I also spent six months working at the Laboratoire de Psychobiologie de l’Enfant of the Conseil National de Recherche Scientifique, Paris. I took early retirement from the University of Ottawa in 2014.  I began my work at Boston College in September of the same year.

In 2024, I retired from full-time teaching and clinical practice.  I remain active, however, in teaching, specializing in online asynchronous courses.  I am also an active research consultant.

At various stages of my academic career, I have maintained my clinical involvement part-time as a psychologist in private practice, consultant to a network of daycare centres, and consultant to a group home for young offenders. I also helped supervise the practicum and internship experiences of doctoral students in clinical psychology and newly registered psychologists for 21 years. In my private practice and consultation with institutions in other countries, I particularly enjoy helping children and adolescents who are facing the simultaneous challenges of dealing with psychological difficulties and a new culture.

I have been the supervisor of 14 completed doctoral theses and 19 completed master’s theses.
